David Chieze represents a new generation of French perfumers who combine analytical precision with artistic sensitivity. He discovered his passion for perfumery at the age of seventeen and pursued it with remarkable determination. His first experience came as a fragrance advisor at L’Artisan Parfumeur, where he began experimenting on his own—deconstructing and reconstructing classic accords like rose and lily of the valley during his free time. This self-taught approach became the foundation of his distinctive style.

His background in chemistry provided him with strong technical knowledge, but a key turning point in his development was his mentorship under renowned perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour. After an intensive learning period, Duchaufour introduced him to Mark Buxton, with whom Chieze quickly formed a strong creative partnership. This collaboration eventually led to his current role at LUZI, a Swiss family-owned fragrance company, where he works alongside Buxton in their Paris office.

Chieze’s creative philosophy is centered on balancing contrasts to achieve harmony—an idea inspired by nature. He often describes fragrances in terms of texture, such as smooth, rough, or vibrant. This unique perspective allows him to combine seemingly opposing notes into cohesive and harmonious compositions. His inspiration comes from personal memories, travel experiences, and cultural impressions, all of which he translates into olfactory storytelling.

Despite being relatively early in his career, Chieze has already built an impressive portfolio, creating fragrances for over 20 niche brands including Electimuss, Kajal, Swiss Arabian, and Thomas de Monaco. His talent has been recognized with several prestigious awards, including a nomination for the Art and Olfaction Award and a win at the ACS International Perfumers Contest.

One of his standout creations is Astrum Nova for Electimuss, which perfectly illustrates his philosophy of harmonious contrasts. The fragrance opens with vibrant mango and citrus notes before evolving into a rich base of oud, oakmoss, and vanilla. This composition highlights his ability to balance tropical brightness with deep, woody complexity—what he describes as “modern opulence.”

A defining element of his style is his fascination with rose, a material he values for its versatility and creative depth. His fragrances often feature unexpected textural elements and striking contrasts, reflecting his belief that perfumery is ultimately a pursuit of harmony.
