Inaba Tomoo
An autodidact shaping niche perfumery
Tomoo Inaba (稲葉 智夫) followed an unconventional path into the world of fragrance. In his twenties, he organized events and exhibitions in Tokyo before relocating to the quieter coastal regions of Kyushu in southern Japan. This deliberate shift toward a slower, nature-oriented lifestyle became a defining influence on his later work as a perfumer.
Without formal training, Inaba approached perfumery as a self-taught discipline. In the mid-2000s, he founded a fragrance distribution company and quickly realized that a deep understanding of raw materials was essential. With remarkable dedication, he began studying vintage perfumes and individual ingredients in great detail. At the same time, he created his own botanical garden, cultivating incense materials, jasmine, ylang-ylang, tuberose, and Damask rose—an enduring source of inspiration for his creative process.
In addition, he runs Profice.jp, Japan’s largest perfume platform, where he has published more than 5,200 fragrance reviews. This background as a critic gives him a unique perspective: he evaluates his own creations with the same rigor he applies to others.
His style exists at the intersection of Japanese botanical aesthetics and the rich, structured traditions of classical European perfumery. He often works within the chypre framework—built on citrus, florals, and an earthy, mossy base—while layering it with intense, emotionally charged elements. Resins, oud, and smoke meet powdery florals such as rose, iris, and heliotrope, resulting in compositions that feel dense, atmospheric, and almost cinematic rather than minimalist.
Due to Japan’s strict cosmetic regulations, which complicate domestic fragrance production, Inaba chose early on to collaborate with international niche houses. This decision opened his work to a global audience.
Three defining creations
Inaba’s international breakthrough came through his collaboration with the Canadian niche house Zoologist, founded by Victor Wong. Nightingale was originally composed as a personal project—a floral chypre inspired by a Japanese poem about an empress who renounces royal life for a spiritual path. Themes of love, loss, and transformation are woven into the scent: plum blossom, saffron, and bergamot unfold over a complex base of moss, oud, and white musk. The result is an intimate, layered fragrance with remarkable depth.
With Moth, Inaba revealed a darker and more intense facet of his craft. The concept was inspired by the crackling heat of a fire—translated into scent. A bold opening of cumin, black pepper, clove, and saffron gives way to softer, powdery notes of heliotrope and iris. Honey and resins add richness, while a persistent smoky accord lingers throughout. Moth is daring, opulent, and strikingly long-lasting.
Orchid Mantis, by contrast, explores a lighter, greener dimension. The fragrance evokes the humid atmosphere of a tropical greenhouse: juicy pear, aromatic basil, and fresh green notes lead into a lush floral heart of orchid, ylang-ylang, and jasmine. An earthy, mossy base grounds the composition. Inspired by the orchid mantis itself, the scent balances elegance with a subtle underlying wildness.
Across his work, a coherent artistic vision emerges. Inaba deliberately plays with contrasts—light and darkness, softness and intensity, nature and structure. Alongside his creative work, he is also an educator, teaching perfumery courses in Japan and advocating for olfactory education.
As a critic, creator, and teacher, Tomoo Inaba occupies a rare and influential position. He stands as one of the most respected voices in contemporary niche perfumery—and one whose most important work may still lie ahead.
