Sophie Labbé’s journey into perfumery began with a defining encounter that would shape her entire career. After studying chemistry, a meeting in 1985 with Jean Kerléo, the legendary in-house perfumer of Jean Patou, ignited her passion for fragrance creation. Inspired by this moment, she enrolled at ISIPCA in Versailles, where she graduated top of her class in 1987, followed by advanced training at the Givaudan Perfumery School in Geneva.

Her career spans more than three decades. She began at Givaudan before joining IFF (International Flavors & Fragrances) in 1992, where she honed her craft for over 27 years. In 2019, she became a Principal Perfumer at Firmenich (now dsm-firmenich), continuing to create exceptional fragrances for renowned brands such as Armani, Bvlgari, Calvin Klein, Givenchy, and Yves Saint Laurent.

Labbé’s artistic vision is deeply rooted in her childhood experiences, divided between urban Paris and the natural landscapes of Charente-Maritime. This contrast exposed her to a wide range of scents—from city life to vineyard harvests and sea breezes—and continues to influence her work. She describes her perfumery as an expression of “tenderness, joy, and generosity,” often comparing the creative process to gardening, where patience and care lead to beautiful results.

Sophie Labbé’s portfolio includes numerous iconic and commercially successful fragrances. Her breakthrough came in 1996 with Givenchy Organza, followed by celebrated creations such as Bvlgari Jasmin Noir (2008), Calvin Klein Beauty (2010), and Salvatore Ferragamo Signorina (2011). Her versatility is evident in both romantic floral compositions like YSL Parisienne and modern interpretations such as Rose Magnetic for Essential Parfums.

A standout example of her storytelling ability is Russian Leather for Memo Paris. This evocative fragrance captures the essence of Siberian landscapes through a blend of aromatic herbs, leather, and woody notes, transporting the wearer to a specific place and atmosphere.

In 2005, Labbé made history as the first woman to receive the prestigious François Coty Award (now Prix International du Parfum), cementing her status as one of the most respected perfumers in the industry. Her creative process involves close collaboration with brands, carefully listening to their stories while adding her own innovative touch. She often begins by writing a narrative for herself, translating words into ingredients, and believes that the name of a perfume is essential, as it encapsulates the entire concept of the fragrance.
