Shyamala Maisondieu’s path to becoming one of the most celebrated perfumers of her generation began in Malaysia, where her multicultural upbringing profoundly shaped her artistic vision. Growing up in a Malaysian-Indian family, she was surrounded by rich and evocative scents—from blooming frangipani and jasmine to the carefully blended spices in her mother’s cooking. These early sensory experiences laid the foundation for her distinctive creative approach.
After studying chemical engineering in London, she discovered her passion for perfumery during a stay in Hong Kong. She then trained at the prestigious Givaudan Perfumery School in France. Her career evolved from working in consumer goods to creating fine fragrances, and in 2016 she joined Givaudan’s elite team of perfumers. Since then, she has developed over 80 unique and expressive fragrances.
Her creative philosophy centers on reinterpreting traditional perfumery codes through a global lens. She describes her style as poetic, inventive, and romantic, always striving to balance comfort with exotic sensuality. Viewing her multicultural heritage as a strength, she creates fragrances that resonate across cultures while maintaining a universal appeal.
Her signature style often combines warm spices—reflecting her Malaysian roots—with fresh citrus notes and refined florals. She frequently works with ingredients such as iris and ylang-ylang, and is known for blending contrasting elements to create memorable and multidimensional olfactory experiences.
