Shelley Waddington grew up in the artist colony of Carmel-by-the-Sea, one of the most picturesque villages along the California coast. A true polymath, she holds an M.A. in Existential-Phenomenological Psychology, taught music for ten years, and plays a wide range of instruments including clarinet, saxophone, accordion, and guitar. She first experimented with perfume creation at the age of ten—an early spark that would ultimately shape her career.

Her formal training took her to Galimard in Grasse, France, where she studied classical perfumery techniques. Upon returning to California, she established herself as the chief perfumer at Carmel Perfumery by 2009, creating fragrances inspired by the history and landscapes of her hometown. She later founded EnVoyage Perfumes, an indie house known for imaginative small-batch creations with a strong emphasis on natural materials and proprietary blends. Her deep interest in ethnobotany—the study of how indigenous cultures use plants—strongly influences her approach to perfumery.

Waddington’s ability to translate the natural world into scent made her an ideal collaborator for Zoologist Perfumes. She created Hummingbird, a radiant nectar-like floral composition centered around cherry blossom and tropical fruits, and Civet, a rich, animalic fragrance featuring black pepper, bergamot, and opulent florals wrapped in warm musky notes. These two scents represent striking contrasts: Hummingbird is airy and sunlit, while Civet is dark, luxurious, and sophisticated.

Her work has received significant recognition, including being named CaFleureBon Indie Rising Star of the Year in 2011. She is also the author of Perfuming with Natural Isolates (2012), a reference work based on her contributions to the Natural Perfume Academy, helping to educate and inspire a new generation of artisan perfumers.
