Sarah McCartney is a British perfumer, author, and founder of the independent fragrance house 4160 Tuesdays. Her journey into perfumery was unconventional, beginning with words rather than scent. Raised in northern England, she studied mathematics and science before joining Lush Cosmetics in 1996 as a copywriter.

Over the next fourteen years, she played a key role in shaping the brand’s voice as it grew globally. A turning point came when Lush founder Mark Constantine introduced her to raw fragrance materials as a creative challenge. This sparked a deep interest, which she developed through extensive self-study.

After leaving Lush, McCartney began writing a novella centered around a perfumer. She created the fragrances described in the story—and when readers wanted to buy them, fiction turned into reality. In 2011, she launched 4160 Tuesdays, a name reflecting her belief that life’s limited number of Tuesdays should each be meaningful.

McCartney approaches perfumery as a narrative art form. For her, each fragrance is a story, a scene, or an emotional experience rather than just a blend of ingredients. Her creative process is synesthetic—she perceives scents in musical terms, composing them like harmonies and melodies.

She is also known for challenging traditional luxury norms in perfumery. Her fragrances are handcrafted in small batches, often limited to a few hundred bottles, using techniques that span decades of perfume-making history. Her smaller bottle sizes and transparent communication reflect her commitment to accessibility and authenticity.

Beyond her own brand, McCartney collaborates with various creative partners. For Zoologist Perfumes, she created Macaque, inspired by her interest in primatology. She has also worked with Sarah Baker Perfumes, translating cultural imagery into scent.

Her work extends into the art world through fragrance installations for galleries and museums, where she combines scent with visual and musical elements to create immersive experiences.

As an author, she co-wrote The Perfume Companion with Luca Turin and founded Scenthusiasm, an online platform dedicated to perfumery education. She is also part of an interdisciplinary research group exploring the science of olfactory perception.
