Nicolas Beaulieu’s journey into perfumery began in a small village near Provins, France. Surrounded by the spices of his mother’s kitchen and the natural scents of a large garden, he developed an early sensitivity to smell. Initially dreaming of becoming an archaeologist, his path changed at the age of 14 when a career advisor introduced him to ISIPCA, France’s leading perfumery school.
His education combined chemistry studies at ISIPCA with hands-on training at IFF and Laboratories Monique Remy. This dual approach gave him a deep understanding of both natural and synthetic materials. He began his career at IFF, working internationally in Ireland, the Netherlands, New York, and Shanghai before settling in Paris in 2008 to focus on fine fragrance creation.
Beaulieu describes himself as an “archaeologist of scent,” driven by the desire to uncover hidden layers within raw materials. His time at LMR deepened his appreciation for natural ingredients through experiences such as harvesting roses in Grasse and daffodils in Lozère. At the same time, he is equally passionate about synthetics, particularly aldehydes and green notes like violet leaf and galbanum, which he uses boldly in his compositions.
His creative philosophy revolves around joy, clarity, and emotional connection. He favors powerful, diffusive fragrances built on concise formulas that deliver a clear message. Inspired by wine, gastronomy, and travel, he often approaches scent through the lens of texture and color. His move to Symrise Fine Fragrance as Vice-President Senior Perfumer marked another significant milestone in his career.
