Marie Salamagne’s path into perfumery took an unexpected turn. Born in Paris in 1977 into a family of doctors, she initially pursued medical studies and even considered specializing in child psychiatry. However, during her studies in chemistry, she discovered her true passion: fragrance. This pivotal realization led her to the Institut Supérieur International du Parfum in Versailles and ultimately reshaped her career.
Since joining Firmenich in 2001, Salamagne has built an impressive and diverse portfolio, collaborating with renowned brands such as Yves Saint Laurent, Guerlain, Maison Martin Margiela, and Jo Malone London. Early in her career, she gained recognition with Mandarine Basilic for Guerlain’s Aqua Allegoria collection, establishing her reputation in the competitive world of perfumery.
At the heart of her creative philosophy lies the power of fragrance to evoke memory and emotion—much like Proust’s famous madeleine. Salamagne approaches her work both as a craftswoman and an artist. Her creative process is deeply introspective and structured, involving extensive note-taking where she captures ideas and connects them with specific raw materials.
Her signature style features bold, character-driven ingredients such as patchouli, woods, balsamic accords, ambergris, and iris. She is also known for her experimental use of salty and mineral notes, embracing creative risks with confidence. This fearless approach has led to ongoing collaborations since 2015 with Atelier des Ors, where she is considered a defining perfumer.
