Luca Maffei stands out as one of the most compelling voices in contemporary niche perfumery. Born in 1985 in Italy, he was introduced to the world of fragrance at an early age, influenced by his father Marco’s work with major fragrance companies such as Symrise. However, rather than simply following in his footsteps, Maffei forged his own path through dedication, curiosity, and a strong artistic vision.
After initially studying economics in Milan, he chose to pursue his true passion at the age of 22, moving to Grasse—the heart of perfumery. There, he trained under renowned perfumer Françoise Marin, mastering the classical Jean-Carles method. This solid foundation, combined with his experience alongside Vincent Ricord at Expressions Parfumées, shaped his ability to balance traditional techniques with modern innovation.
In 2011, Maffei co-founded Atelier Fragranze Milano with his father, where he serves as both CEO and principal perfumer. His creative philosophy is rooted in deeply understanding each brand’s identity and translating it into olfactory expression. For him, perfumery is above all an art form—driven by emotion, intuition, and creative dialogue rather than purely technical formulation.
His collaborative approach has led to partnerships with respected niche brands such as Masque Milano, Jul et Mad Paris, Carthusia, and Laboratorio Olfattivo. His ability to blend classical structures with contemporary twists earned him recognition from the Société Française des Parfumeurs, which welcomed him as a member in 2014.
