Kévin Mathys represents a new generation of perfumers who blend traditional craftsmanship with modern innovation. Growing up in the French countryside, his fascination with scent began early. As a child, he experimented with blending his own colognes, driven by a curiosity about why certain fragrances are more appealing than others and how they are constructed.

His path into professional perfumery began in a self-taught way, learning about raw materials and fragrance structures online before pursuing formal studies in Montpellier. He later secured a trainee position at Bell F&F in Leipzig, where he was mentored by Sebastian Reuter. Although he initially considered a career as a cosmetic chemist, he soon realized that perfumery offered the perfect balance between science and creativity. During his studies, he further developed his skills by creating his own blends using essential oils and various fragrance notes.

Today, Mathys works as a perfumer at CPL Aromas in Dubai and has collaborated with renowned brands such as Electimuss, Fragrance Du Bois, Kajal, and Neesh Perfumes. His creative philosophy centers on the idea that fragrance is an emotional trigger—allowing him to become part of people’s personal memories and experiences. He particularly enjoys working with leather, woody, and amber notes, highlighting their versatility across both masculine and feminine compositions.

Mathys has gained recognition for his thoughtful and innovative fragrance creations. Among his notable works are Caspian Cherry and Patchouli of the Underworld for Electimuss, as well as Voyage à Paris for Fragrance Du Bois. His creation Kajal IV was named a finalist in the Independent category at the 2024 Art and Olfaction Awards, underscoring his growing influence in the industry.

His creative process often begins with a visual concept or an inspiring word. From there, he sketches out initial accords and gradually refines them through a process of experimentation—smelling, adjusting, and fine-tuning. For Caspian Cherry, for example, he envisioned a decadent dessert at a Roman banquet, building the fragrance around cherry and enriching it with notes of chocolate, coffee, honey, and cinnamon, before balancing the sweetness with earthy patchouli and sandalwood.

Mathys has a particular affinity for Haitian vetiver oil, appreciating its multifaceted character—ranging from woody and refined to citrusy, leathery, and earthy. His philosophy is to create distinctive fragrances without being overly unconventional, using familiar notes in unexpected ways.

For Mathys, perfumery is a continuous learning process. He compares it to mastering a language, where understanding the culture and history behind it is essential to achieving true fluency.
