Karine Vinchon-Spehner’s journey into perfumery is rooted in vivid childhood memories that continue to shape her artistic vision. Growing up in Normandy, she was surrounded by the sweet aromas of her grandfather’s biscuit bakery and the fresh scent of apple orchards. A later move to the south of France introduced her to a new olfactory landscape filled with mimosa, jasmine, and lavender. However, the defining moment came during her studies, when she experienced the transformative power of Must de Cartier worn by a friend’s mother—an encounter that revealed her true calling.

Motivated by this experience, she enrolled at ISIPCA in Versailles, one of the world’s leading perfumery schools. In 2002, she joined Robertet in Grasse, where she trained under Christian Rostain and later the renowned Michel Almairac. Under their guidance, she developed a fundamental principle: every ingredient must justify its presence and contribute to a coherent narrative. Almairac’s concept of épure—the art of refinement and simplification—became central to her creative approach. She spent 18 months meticulously weighing his formulas and providing detailed feedback, sharpening her analytical precision.

Her breakthrough came early. At just 24, she signed her first major project: L’Eau de Jatamansi for L’Artisan Parfumeur, one of the first fully certified natural fragrances. This achievement established her reputation for working with challenging natural materials such as spikenard and demonstrated her ability to transform unconventional ingredients into compelling compositions.

Karine’s perfumery is defined by what she describes as “direct and demanding” compositions—bold, expressive scents that highlight the richness and generosity of natural raw materials. Her affinity for amber, woody notes, patchouli, and vetiver runs throughout her work and has contributed to some of the most celebrated creations in niche perfumery.

Her collaboration with Amouage has been particularly significant, resulting in acclaimed fragrances such as Interlude Woman, Memoir Man, and Lineage, the latter receiving the Beverley Bayne Award in 2023. For Memo Paris, she created Tiger’s Nest, a mystical incense composition inspired by a sacred monastery in Bhutan. The fragrance opens with absinthe and aldehydes, unfolds into a heart of incense absolute and saffron, and settles into a warm base of tolu balm and vanilla.

Her work for Casamorati includes 1888, a rich, spicy oriental fragrance that showcases her mastery of complex compositions. It balances green pepper and clove with exotic ylang-ylang, anchored by a warm base of sandalwood and amber.

Beyond her creative work, Karine is deeply committed to mentoring the next generation of perfumers at Robertet, passing on both technical expertise and the lessons learned from her own mentors. For her, perfumery goes beyond technique—it is an emotional art form. She sees fragrance as her most instinctive mode of expression, creating scents that invite wearers to interpret and continue the stories she begins.
