Karine Chevallier is one of France’s most respected independent perfumers, and her journey began with a deep fascination for both chemistry and fragrance. After graduating from the prestigious ISIPCA in the mid-1990s, she trained under Jean-François Blayn, a student of the legendary Edmond Roudnitska. She further strengthened this classical foundation in 1996 at Haarmann & Reimer, where she worked alongside renowned perfumer Mark Buxton.

A distinctive element of Chevallier’s career is her foray into luxury marketing. In 2000, she completed a Master’s degree in Luxury Marketing and gained valuable experience at Guerlain. This business perspective shaped her understanding of perfume as a complex blend of craftsmanship, art, memory, and luxury. Combining technical expertise with strategic insight, she founded her own company, Olfactive Design, in 2005—with encouragement from Michel Roudnitska.

At the core of her philosophy lies the principle “less is more.” Chevallier emphasizes clarity, precision, and elegance. She describes herself as a kind of “ghostwriter,” translating brand identities into scent through her deep technical knowledge and understanding of perfumery history. This storytelling approach has made her a sought-after collaborator for niche brands looking to create authentic olfactory narratives.

Chevallier’s portfolio is marked by both versatility and conceptual depth. For Une Nuit Nomade, she created fragrances such as Fleur des Fleurs and Murmure des Dieux, both inspired by the tropical beauty of Bali, each offering a distinct olfactory interpretation of the island. These works highlight her ability to capture place and emotion through scent.

Her collaboration with Gallivant Perfumes further showcases her talent for olfactory storytelling. Drawing inspiration from cities like London, Istanbul, Tel Aviv, Berlin, Los Angeles, and Buenos Aires, she creates fragrances that embody the energy and identity of each metropolis. Her fragrance London was a finalist at the 2018 Art and Olfaction Awards.

Beyond commercial work, Chevallier is also deeply engaged in artistic and experimental projects. She has recreated the scent of the Chauvet Cave and developed fragrances for art exhibitions, including collaborations with artist Enki Bilal. In partnership with Nicolas Olczyk, she has explored futuristic scent concepts such as “Martian soil” and “petrified gas,” demonstrating her innovative and forward-thinking approach.

Since 2014, Chevallier has been dedicated to nurturing the next generation of perfumers, teaching at the École Supérieure du Parfum in Paris. Her involvement with the Société Internationale des Parfumeurs Créateurs further reflects her commitment to preserving and advancing the art of independent perfumery.
