Julie Massé’s journey into perfumery began in an unexpected place—Tokyo, where she was born and spent her early childhood. The refined aesthetic sensibility of Japan left a lasting impression on her, yet it was her family roots in Grasse that ultimately shaped her destiny. With her father working in the fragrance industry, she grew up surrounded by raw materials and scent samples, igniting a lifelong passion.
After three years of studying chemistry, Massé enrolled at the prestigious ISIPCA in Versailles. Her professional path began in Grasse, where she worked in quality control at Fragrance Resources, gaining an in-depth understanding of raw materials.
A defining moment in her development was her three-year mentorship under legendary perfumer Pierre Bourdon, who introduced her to the Jean-Carle method—“narrative perfumery,” where formulas are composed on paper like landscapes.
Massé’s creative vision centers on crafting fragrances as “invisible companions”—protective, empowering presences that enhance confidence and emotional well-being. She draws primary inspiration from natural ingredients, particularly the orange tree in all its facets: blossom, fruit, peel, leaf, and neroli.
Her Mediterranean roots are deeply reflected in her work, with frequent visits to rose, jasmine, and tuberose fields in Grasse serving as ongoing sources of inspiration.
Since joining MANE in 2010, Massé has been known for her collaborative approach and her ability to blend traditional techniques with innovative extraction methods. She works with major fashion houses such as Giorgio Armani and Yves Saint Laurent, while also serving as in-house perfumer for the niche brand Shay & Blue since 2012.
