Josh Meyer is one of the most innovative indie perfumers in the United States, with a career path far from conventional. Born in Hermosa Beach, California, he initially worked in real estate before discovering his passion for fragrance in an unexpected way—through an online shaving community that introduced him to niche perfumery around 2006–2007.

This chance encounter transformed a former fragrance skeptic into a creative visionary who would redefine the relationship between scent and storytelling.

A true autodidact, Meyer’s approach is driven by curiosity, experimentation, and intensive self-study. Beginning in 2010, he immersed himself in fragrance materials, spending countless hours in his lab refining his craft and developing a distinctive creative voice outside traditional training systems.

In 2012, he founded Imaginary Authors, a brand built on a unique concept: each fragrance is inspired by a fictional book and its imagined author. Every scent is accompanied by a narrative, transporting the wearer into a distinct world and enhancing the emotional depth of the experience.

Meyer is particularly known for his ability to create almost photorealistic olfactory experiences. Compositions such as A City on Fire capture the exact scent of burning matches and smoke, while Cape Heartache blends the forests of the Pacific Northwest with unexpected strawberry notes.
