Francis Kurkdjian is one of the most influential perfumers of his generation. Born in Paris in 1969 to Armenian parents, he initially aspired to become a ballet dancer. After not being accepted into the Paris Opera Ballet School, he redirected his creative energy toward perfumery—a field that had fascinated him since his early teens.

After graduating from ISIPCA, he began his career at Quest International. His breakthrough came remarkably early: at just 26, he created Le Male for Jean Paul Gaultier, a fragrance that became a global icon and established his reputation overnight.

Kurkdjian views perfume as an art form and a means of emotional expression. Rather than focusing on a single signature scent, he promotes the idea of a “fragrance wardrobe,” where different perfumes reflect various moods and aspects of personality. His work is characterized by clarity, elegance, and a modern reinterpretation of classical structures.

Throughout his career, Kurkdjian has created fragrances for major houses such as Dior, Guerlain, Yves Saint Laurent, and Burberry. Creations like Narciso Rodriguez for Her further solidified his standing as a master perfumer.

In 2009, he co-founded Maison Francis Kurkdjian with Marc Chaya, which quickly became a leading niche fragrance house and was later acquired by LVMH.

Among his most celebrated works are Enlèvement au Sérail and Rose de Siwa, both showcasing his ability to merge timeless elegance with contemporary sensibility. The former highlights the richness of white florals, while the latter captures the airy freshness of roses with remarkable naturalness.

In 2021, Kurkdjian was appointed Creative Director of Perfume Creation at Parfums Christian Dior, where he continues to shape the brand’s olfactory future. Beyond commercial success, he is also deeply involved in artistic projects, including scent installations at prestigious venues such as the Palace of Versailles and the Grand Palais.

His work reflects a broader mission: to establish perfumery as a true art form and to elevate the role of the perfumer as a creative artist.
