Dominique Ropion is considered one of the most influential and technically skilled perfumers of our time. Born in Paris in 1955, his path into perfumery was somewhat unexpected, despite early exposure through family members who worked in the fragrance industry. Initially, he pursued a degree in physics with the goal of becoming an engineer, but a vacancy at the Roure perfumery school in Grasse set him on a different course.

Under the mentorship of Jean-Louis Sieuzac, Ropion developed his precise and analytical approach over many years. He views perfumery as a form of architecture, building fragrances from a central idea and shaping them layer by layer with attention to balance, structure, and contrast. His work is defined by clarity and a strong olfactory identity.

Ropion’s philosophy is rooted in a deep understanding of classical fragrance structures, which he uses as a foundation for innovation. He believes that a great perfume must be distinctive and possess a powerful presence. He is especially renowned for his mastery of floral notes such as rose, jasmine, tuberose, and violet, which he interprets with exceptional depth and precision.

Throughout his career, Ropion has created numerous groundbreaking fragrances. His early success with Givenchy Ysatis marked the beginning of an extraordinary journey, followed by globally recognized creations such as La Vie est Belle, Alien, Flowerbomb, and La Nuit de L’Homme.

His collaborations with Frédéric Malle resulted in acclaimed compositions like Portrait of a Lady and Carnal Flower, now widely regarded as modern classics.

Since 2000, Ropion has worked as a master perfumer at IFF and has received numerous awards for his contributions. Beyond his creations, he is deeply committed to mentoring the next generation of perfumers and has played a key role in developing educational programs.
