Dmitry Bortnikoff’s journey into the world of fragrance began far from traditional perfumery. Originally trained as an architect at the Moscow Architectural Institute, he discovered his passion for scent during his travels across Asia. There, he encountered traditional perfumery practices and authentic oud, which sparked a transformation from architect to artisan perfumer.

In 2013, he co-founded Feel-Oud with Russian Adam, focusing on the distillation of precious oils from agarwood and sandalwood. This experience gave him a deep understanding of natural raw materials and traditional distillation techniques. By 2017, he launched his own brand, Bortnikoff, and established operations in Thailand, where he could access high-quality ingredients and work within more flexible regulations that support the use of natural materials.

Bortnikoff is known for his uncompromising commitment to authenticity. His fragrances typically contain a very high percentage of natural ingredients, many of which are distilled in-house. He works with rare materials such as Siberian deer musk, wild Vietnamese oud, and genuine ambergris, creating complex compositions with numerous components. His philosophy prioritizes artistic vision over cost, using materials in the quantities required to achieve the desired result.

Bortnikoff’s creations combine artisanal skill with rich complexity. Amber Cologne demonstrates his ability to craft fresh yet luxurious fragrances, blending bright citrus notes with precious ingredients like ambergris and multiple oud varieties.

His oud-centered compositions highlight the depth of his craftsmanship. Lao Oud is a powerful and animalic fragrance, combining honeyed and floral nuances with deeper, more intense facets. Inspired by his travels to Laos, it evokes landscapes and spiritual atmospheres through notes such as coffee, frangipani, and incense.

With Sayat Nova, inspired by an 18th-century Armenian poet, Bortnikoff showcases his storytelling approach. The fragrance opens with syrupy apricot and narcissus, evolving into a heart of rum and vanilla, all supported by a base of multiple oud varieties. Musk Khabib reflects his mastery of animalic materials, blending real deer musk with ambergris and oakmoss in a composition that balances intensity with wearability.

All of Bortnikoff’s fragrances are released in limited batches, as the natural variability of ingredients like oud makes exact replication impossible. Each bottle captures a unique moment in time, reflecting the perfumer’s dedication to natural artistry and craftsmanship.
