Christine Nagel’s rise to becoming one of the most influential perfumers of our time was anything but conventional. Born in Geneva in 1959, she initially studied medicine before discovering her passion for organic chemistry. She began her career at Firmenich, working in research and chromatography, where she analyzed fragrances on a molecular level and developed an exceptional ability to identify ingredients purely by scent.

Despite early doubts about her unconventional background, she remained determined. In Italy, she founded her own company and quickly captured a significant share of the market. Collaborations with renowned fashion houses such as Fendi and Versace demonstrated her unique ability to combine scientific precision with creative intuition.

Her philosophy of fragrance creation stands apart from traditional approaches. Nagel views perfumes as structured, almost tangible compositions rather than linear scent progressions. For her, every fragrance begins with an emotion, and she is unafraid to challenge and reshape raw materials to create unexpected and distinctive olfactory experiences.

A major milestone came in 2016 when she became the first woman to be appointed sole in-house perfumer and Creative Director at Hermès Parfums. In this role, she enjoys significant artistic freedom, allowing her to work independently of market trends.

Nagel’s portfolio includes many influential fragrances. She achieved international recognition with Narciso Rodriguez for Her (2003), created in collaboration with Francis Kurkdjian, which received multiple awards. Other notable creations include Miss Dior Chérie, Giorgio Armani Sì, and Wood Sage & Sea Salt for Jo Malone.

With Archives 69 for Etat Libre d’Orange, she showcased her experimental spirit. The fragrance blends unusual elements such as camphor, fruity notes, and spices, deliberately challenging traditional fragrance structures.

At Hermès, she continues to shape the world of perfumery with creations like Galop d’Hermès, the Twilly d’Hermès line, and H24. Her scientific background enables her to use synthetic molecules as creative tools, seamlessly bridging tradition and modernity.
