Born in Grasse, the birthplace of modern perfumery, Céline Barel grew up immersed in the ever-changing aromas of seasonal distillations. These early experiences, enriched by time spent in Morocco, fostered a sense of curiosity and openness that continues to shape her creative approach. What began as a childhood fascination with collecting perfume bottles gradually evolved into a defining passion.
Initially pursuing a career in marketing, Barel earned a Master’s degree in Marketing and International Management. However, her path shifted during an internship at Mane, where she discovered the artistry behind fragrance creation. She later joined IFF, balancing her marketing role with intensive self-study of raw materials. Her commitment led her to successfully enter IFF’s prestigious perfumery training program.
Her education took her across multiple countries, including the Netherlands, New York, Paris, and Grasse. Under the mentorship of Pierre Wargny, she developed a refined technique focused on creating “echo” within fragrances—ensuring that ingredients interact harmoniously over time. This experience marked her transformation into a skilled and confident perfumer.
Barel approaches perfumery with a distinctly visual mindset. She often conceptualizes scents through colors, textures, and shapes before translating them into compositions. By sketching “olfactive systems,” she structures her formulas around key ingredients, aiming to create fragrances that stimulate multiple senses and evoke synesthetic experiences.
