Carlos Benaïm’s journey to becoming one of the most influential perfumers of his generation began in Tangier, Morocco. Raised in a Spanish family, his early years were surrounded by rich sensory experiences—his grandmother’s kitchen filled with warm spices like cinnamon and sugar, and his father’s pharmacy where essential oils were distilled from local plants. These formative impressions laid the foundation for his future creative vision.
At the age of 17, Benaïm moved to France to study chemical engineering at the University of Toulouse. His introduction to perfumery came unexpectedly during a training placement at Lautier Fils in Grasse, where he discovered his passion and began teaching himself the art of fragrance creation. A classified ad for International Flavors & Fragrances (IFF) in 1967 set him on a path that would define his life’s work.
Guided by renowned perfumer Ernest Shiftan, who recognized his potential and encouraged him to pursue perfumery, Benaïm refined his craft. Further mentorship from Bernard Chant and Max Gavarry in Paris deepened his understanding of classical perfumery. His scientific background, combined with artistic sensibility, enabled him to seamlessly merge technical precision with creative expression.
In 2013, Benaïm became IFF’s first-ever Master Perfumer, a distinction that acknowledges his enduring contribution to the evolution of fragrance. His philosophy centers on creating emotionally compelling compositions, trusting that authenticity naturally leads to success.
