Calice Becker is widely recognized as one of the most influential perfumers in contemporary fragrance. Born in Paris to Russian parents, her fascination with scent began in childhood, driven by a simple yet profound question: how can the essence of flowers be captured in a bottle? This curiosity led her to study at the renowned Roure Bertrand Dupont school in Grasse in 1985, where she trained under legendary perfumers Dominique Ropion and Françoise Caron.

Her breakthrough came with Tommy Girl in 1996, a fresh, youthful fragrance that quickly gained global success. Just a few years later, Dior J’adore (1999) established her as a leading creative force in perfumery. Inspired by 17th-century Dutch floral paintings, the fragrance redefined the modern fruity-floral category with its luminous, golden composition and perfectly balanced bouquet.

Becker’s creative philosophy is rooted in elegance and harmony. Even when working with bold or complex ingredients, her compositions remain smooth and refined. She often deconstructs raw materials before rebuilding them into cohesive structures—an approach clearly seen in J’adore, where each floral element was developed individually before being unified into a seamless accord.

Today, Becker serves as Vice President Perfumer at Givaudan and Director of its Perfumery School. She is also President of The International Society of Perfumer-Creators, where she advocates for the recognition of perfumery as an intellectual and artistic discipline.

Becker’s portfolio includes some of the most celebrated fragrances of modern times. Beyond J’adore and Tommy Girl, she has created standout compositions such as the By Kilian collection (Back to Black, Love, Don’t Be Shy), Tom Ford Velvet Orchid, and Estée Lauder Beyond Paradise. Each reflects her ability to merge artistic depth with broad appeal.

Her work for Essential Parfums highlights her talent within niche perfumery. The Musc embodies her clean and contemporary interpretation of classic ingredients. Opening with fresh ginger and aromatic lavandin, it develops into a soft, creamy heart of beeswax and musk, grounded by warm sandalwood—resulting in a refined and effortlessly wearable fragrance.

Becker’s influence extends far beyond her creations. She has received numerous honors, including the Fragrance Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award (2021) and France’s Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters (2019), recognizing her contribution to elevating perfumery as an art form.
