Arnaud Poulain’s journey into perfumery began far from the traditional fragrance world. Born in Arras, northern France, in 1986, he grew up in an environment shaped by craftsmanship—surrounded by a metallurgist father, a carpenter uncle, and farming grandparents. These influences instilled in him a deep appreciation for precision, patience, and artisanal dedication.

Originally trained in mechanical and electrical engineering, Poulain’s path shifted unexpectedly in 2007 during a chance encounter while working in ice cream production. This moment led him to discover perfumery, where he quickly recognized his heightened sensitivity to scent. He pursued formal training at SIADEP in Lens and later at Cinquième Sens in Paris, where he met his mentor, perfumer Amélie Bourgeois of Studio Flair.

In 2015, Poulain founded Les Eaux Primordiales and established his own production site on a 14-hectare estate in Acq, known as Le Domaine Primordial. The brand’s name, inspired by Jules Verne’s Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, reflects his fascination with origins and the essence of life.

Describing himself as a “scent mechanic,” Poulain combines technical precision with artistic creativity. His fragrances often undergo unique maturation processes, including maceration accompanied by classical music tuned to 432 Hz. This fusion of science and artistry defines his vision of “commercial niche” perfumery—refined, high-quality compositions that remain accessible.

Les Eaux Primordiales is structured around several distinctive collections, each reflecting a different creative approach. The Superclassique line revisits traditional French perfumery, with fragrances like Couleur Primaire, which captures the crisp purity of freshly laundered fabrics through aldehydes and clean musks.

The Supercritique collection focuses on CO₂ extraction techniques, preserving the integrity of raw materials, as seen in compositions such as Rose and Mimosa. Meanwhile, the Superfluide range highlights precious ingredients, with creations like Ambre, evoking the warmth of winter evenings through notes of apple, cinnamon, and amber. Saffron explores the richness of the “red gold” spice, while Oud presents a refined interpretation of Laotian oud softened by vanilla and benzoin.

The more recent Supermassive collection emphasizes extrait de parfum concentrations, offering intensified depth and longevity, as demonstrated in Ambre Supermassive. Poulain’s fragrances are known for their lasting presence and carefully structured compositions, often lingering long after application.

His ongoing collaboration with Amélie Bourgeois continues to fuel innovation within the brand, while future projects—including expansions with Perroy and House of Serenity—reflect his ambition to build a broader creative ecosystem. Poulain’s vision extends beyond fragrance, aiming to establish a modern hub for French luxury craftsmanship rooted in both tradition and innovation.
