Annick Ménardo is recognized as one of the most original voices in contemporary perfumery, celebrated for her refined yet rebellious creative approach. Born in Cannes, France, she initially pursued studies in medicine, biochemistry, and organic chemistry before discovering her passion for fragrance at ISIPCA in Versailles.

Her career was shaped early on through mentorship with master perfumer Michel Almairac at Créations Aromatiques. Under his guidance, she developed a distinctive style defined by precision, bold experimentation, and a willingness to explore unconventional materials. In 1991, she joined Firmenich and later rose to the position of Master Perfumer at Symrise, where she continues to innovate within modern perfumery.

Ménardo’s philosophy revolves around creating fragrances with a strong identity and emotional depth. She views perfumery as an intimate and introspective process, where balance and detail are essential, yet creativity must be pushed to its limits. Known for her fascination with smoky, burnt, and unconventional notes, she has earned the nickname “Anise Ménardo” for her signature use of anise and heliotrope.

Her collaborations include some of the most prestigious names in the industry—Dior, Bvlgari, Guerlain, Le Labo, and Hugo Boss—each project reflecting her ability to craft distinctive, memorable scent signatures.

Ménardo’s body of work includes several defining fragrances of modern perfumery. Her creation Dior Hypnotic Poison (1998) redefined oriental fragrances with its rich blend of vanilla and bitter almond, becoming an enduring classic. In the same year, she introduced Bvlgari Black, an avant-garde composition combining rubber and vanilla that challenged traditional fragrance structures and influenced the niche movement.

Her later works further demonstrate her versatility. Bohemian Soul presents a sophisticated woody-smoky composition with frankincense, guaiac wood, myrrh, and sandalwood. Memory Motel blends tobacco, patchouli, and leather into a nostalgic, androgynous scent inspired by rock culture, while Rose America reinvents the rose with unexpected marine and spicy facets.

Her technical expertise is also evident in creations such as Le Labo Patchouli 24 and Hugo Boss Bottled, where she successfully balances artistic expression with broad appeal. Beyond her own creations, Ménardo has played a key role in shaping contemporary perfumery by encouraging experimentation and expanding the boundaries of traditional scent families.

Today, she continues her work at Symrise, mentoring emerging perfumers while creating fragrances that evoke emotion, tell stories, and challenge conventions.
