Aliénor Massenet’s journey into perfumery was shaped by her upbringing in a creative Parisian family with Hungarian heritage. Surrounded by both artists and scientists, she developed an early sensitivity to scent that would later define her signature style. Initially studying art history, she discovered her true vocation at just 17 through a chance internship at Firmenich. What began as a brief experience quickly evolved into a lifelong passion, leading her to train under renowned perfumers Sophia Grojsman and Pierre Wargnye at IFF in New York.

Massenet’s creative philosophy is rooted in emotional storytelling. She approaches fragrance as a visual and sensory art form, often imagining compositions as geometric structures and associating raw materials with colors and feelings. Her work is defined by striking contrasts—combining unexpected elements such as sandalwood with pumpkin, or blending fresh aquatic notes into warm, leathery bases. A recurring signature in her creations is the use of myrrh and labdanum—her “lucky” ingredients—valued for their sensual, slightly licorice-like depth and their personal, almost spiritual significance.

Currently serving as VP Senior Perfumer at Symrise, Massenet has built an extensive portfolio with major brands including Giorgio Armani, Lancôme, Diesel, and Maison Margiela. Her distinctive voice and technical expertise have earned her multiple Fragrance Foundation Awards, solidifying her reputation as a perfumer who crafts deeply emotional and memorable scents.

Massenet is particularly celebrated for her long-standing collaboration with Memo Paris, for whom she has developed much of the brand’s fragrance collection since 2007. Her work on the Cuirs Nomades line highlights her ability to reinterpret leather in innovative ways. African Leather blends warm spices with refined leather, while Irish Leather introduces green mate absolute for a fresh, aromatic twist. French Leather showcases her finesse in pairing soft rose with smooth suede, resulting in understated elegance.

Beyond leather, Massenet explores a wide spectrum of olfactory themes. Winter Palace demonstrates her skill with tea-based compositions, balancing citrus brightness with spices and vanilla warmth. Marfa highlights her floral expertise through creamy tuberose and orange blossom, while Tamarindo reveals a playful side with tropical pineapple and gourmand vanilla notes.

Her influence extends far beyond Memo Paris. Creations such as Maison Margiela’s Replica Jazz Club and Diesel’s Only the Brave have achieved global recognition. Massenet is also committed to sustainability and ethical sourcing, often working closely with raw material producers to ensure fair practices. Additionally, her involvement in therapeutic scent work—particularly with trauma survivors—reflects her belief in fragrance as both an art form and a tool for healing.
