Alexandra Carlin’s journey into perfumery unfolds much like the narrative of a novel. Originally aspiring to become a writer, the Paris-born perfumer discovered her true vocation at the age of 18. A chance encounter with a radio interview featuring a perfumer ignited her fascination, prompting her to leave behind literary studies and pursue the scientific discipline of fragrance creation.

Her path required both determination and resilience. Carlin undertook intensive scientific retraining to meet the necessary chemistry prerequisites before successfully gaining admission to ISIPCA in Versailles on her first attempt. Early in her career, she completed prestigious internships at Dior, where she had the opportunity to observe the development of iconic fragrances such as Dior Homme and Pure Poison.

A pivotal moment came when she sought mentorship from Master Perfumer Maurice Roucel at Symrise. In a remarkable coincidence, she later realized that Roucel was the very voice she had heard years earlier on the radio—the catalyst for her career change. Under his guidance, Carlin refined her experimental mindset and deepened her approach to crafting fragrances as narratives.

Her literary background remains central to her creative identity. She approaches raw materials as if they were words, composing scents like stories. Drawing inspiration from literature, she transforms atmospheric descriptions into olfactory experiences, creating fragrances that evoke characters, emotions, and settings. This narrative-driven approach distinguishes her in a field where technical mastery and artistic expression intersect.

Carlin’s body of work spans renowned houses such as Amouage, Diptyque, and L’Artisan Parfumeur, highlighting her versatility across diverse olfactory styles. Among her notable creations are Honour Woman for Amouage, Tonka Blanc for L’Artisan Parfumeur, and Kyoto for Diptyque—each reflecting her ability to blend technical precision with emotional depth.

Her more recent composition, Grand Master for Mind Games, exemplifies her storytelling approach. The fragrance opens with luminous notes of peony and rose water, unfolds into an unexpected heart of coffee and rose, and settles into a rich base of panettone, frankincense, and ebony wood. This interplay of contrasts—strength and softness, sacred and indulgent—creates a compelling olfactory narrative.

Carlin’s innovative spirit is also evident in her exploration of unconventional ingredients. With Tonka Blanc, she introduced the first perfume incorporating a natural vegetable extract. Her fascination with Madagascan ginger has inspired several compositions, while her curiosity extends to culinary elements, uncovering olfactory potential in surprising ingredients such as asparagus and artichoke.

Since 2024, Carlin has held the position of Senior Fine Fragrance Perfumer at IFF, where she continues to expand creative boundaries. Her award-winning work, including the Fragrance Foundation-recognized Velvet Tonka for BDK Parfums, underscores her growing influence in contemporary perfumery. Driven by constant experimentation and collaboration, she remains a leading voice in shaping the future of fragrance.
