George Tedder
Career & Artistic Vision
George Tedder is one of the most compelling perfumers working today. He holds a Master’s degree from ISIPCA in Versailles, the most prestigious perfumery school in the industry. This foundation gave him a deep understanding of fragrance chemistry long before he released a single niche creation.
He works at IFF (International Flavors & Fragrances), where his role is notably unconventional. Most perfumers specializing in fine fragrance remain within that space. Tedder does not. He creates critically acclaimed niche perfumes while simultaneously developing scents for everyday household products. His work appears on the shelves of both LuckyScent and Ace Hardware—sometimes within the same week.
This duality is not a contradiction. It is his greatest strength.
His philosophy is clear: perfumery is first a technical construction, then an artistic expression. Through years of learning how to make fragrances project and endure in demanding environments such as cleaning products, he has built a technical toolkit that most fine fragrance perfumers simply do not possess. He applies these same stabilization and projection techniques to his niche work, which is why his fragrances tend to perform well above average.
Tedder does not adhere to a single style. He moves with equal confidence between bright, naturalistic green compositions and dense, alcoholic gourmands. On one side, he works with galbanum, basil, and eucalyptus to create almost photorealistic outdoor impressions. On the other, he layers rum, condensed milk, and saffron into rich, heavy compositions that feel almost edible. This range is rare.
He also quietly challenges one of the oldest biases in the fragrance industry. Functional perfumery—the kind used in detergents, candles, and cleaning products—has long been considered inferior to fine fragrance. Tedder openly rejects this hierarchy. In March 2026, he appeared on the Perfume Room podcast to discuss scenting everyday products, bringing genuine enthusiasm to a topic most niche perfumers tend to avoid.
His collaborations with Zoologist Perfumes and Mischief Academy have introduced his work to a broader audience. Both brands value concept-driven storytelling, which aligns perfectly with Tedder’s creative process. He constructs fragrances from specific visual narratives—a moment, a place, a feeling—and then works backward through chemistry to bring them to life.
Notable Creations & Lasting Influence
Tedder’s most discussed release is Koala Joey Edition for Zoologist, launched in 2026. It is an extrait de parfum that captures the atmosphere of an Australian eucalyptus forest just after rainfall. The concept is highly specific: a baby koala emerging from its mother’s pouch into sunlight for the first time.
He built the opening around grand vert basil, clary sage, and grapefruit—bright, green, and slightly herbal. The heart deepens with galbanum, geranium, and cool green mint, supported by soft mimosa that adds a subtle warmth. The base settles into Australian sandalwood and animalic musk, giving the composition a natural, skin-like finish.
Eucalyptus is used with restraint. Where the original Zoologist Koala leaned into sharp, almost medicinal menthol, Tedder’s interpretation feels green and alive—the scent of leaves and bark rather than balm. The reception within the community was strong, with many considering it a significant improvement and one of the standout Zoologist releases in recent years.
His work for Mischief Academy on The Mad Hatter (2025) reveals a completely different facet. Inspired by Alice in Wonderland, it is a dense oriental vanilla composition filled with rum, cognac, black tea, toffee, butter, and leather. The sense of chaos is intentional. Tedder uses the tension between astringent tea and creamy sweetness to reflect the atmosphere of the Mad Hatter’s tea party.
Beyond niche perfumery, he contributed in 2025 to the Mind Games Home Collection alongside other perfumers from IFF and Symrise. The project was nominated as a finalist for “Candle & Home Collection of the Year” at the Fragrance Foundation Awards 2025, marking a meaningful moment in bridging the gap between functional and fine fragrance.
Tedder’s legacy is still in the making, but the direction is clear. He demonstrates that technical mastery developed in less glamorous categories is not a detour from great perfumery—it is preparation for it.
